How to tell if your website is easy to use

How to tell if your website is easy to use

You know your website inside and out.

You know where everything is, how everything works, and where people are supposed to click.

But your visitors don’t.

And just because your website makes sense to you doesn’t mean it’s easy for everyone else to use.

Here are five simple tests you can do yourself to see how user-friendly your website really is.

1. The Five-Second Test

Pull up your homepage and look at it for five seconds.

Can someone immediately tell what your business does, who you help, and what you have to offer?

Or do they have to scroll, read through several paragraphs, and piece things together?

Your visitors shouldn’t have to work that hard to understand your business. Make sure your headline, images, and introductory content communicate the most important information right away.

2. The Three-Click Test

Pick something important that a potential customer might be looking forβ€”your services, pricing, portfolio, contact information, or how to book an appointment.

Now see how quickly you can find it.

Does it take one or two clicks? Or are you digging through menus and jumping between pages?

Three clicks isn’t a magic rule, but it’s a useful exercise for spotting an unnecessarily complicated navigation.

The goal is to make important information as easy to find as possible. If someone has to hunt for it, you may be losing potential customers along the way.

3. The Phone Test

Grab your phone and pull up your website.

And don’t just look at it. Actively swipe around.

Can you navigate your website comfortably with one hand? Are the buttons and links big enough to tap without accidentally clicking something else? Is the text easy to read without zooming in?

Try filling out your contact form, opening your menu, and clicking through a few pages.

A website can look beautiful on a desktop computer and still be incredibly frustrating to use on a phone.

Make sure yours works well on both.

4. The Stranger Test

This one’s especially helpful because it’s hard to spot problems on a website that you’re already familiar with.

Ask a friend, family member, or someone who has never used your website to complete a few simple tasks.

Have them find a specific service, locate your pricing, or figure out how to contact you.

Then take not of their experience.

Don’t give them directions. Don’t explain where anything is. And resist the temptation to jump in when they get stuck.

Pay attention to where they hesitate, what they click, and what confuses them.

You might discover that something you thought was perfectly obvious isn’t obvious at all.

5. The Next-Step Test

Go through your most important pages and ask yourself one simple question:

“What am I supposed to do now?”

Imagine someone has just finished reading about your services.

What’s next?

Should they request a quote? Book a consultation? Make a purchase? Contact you?

Is that next step obvious, or are you leaving them to figure it out?

Every important page should guide visitors toward a logical next step.

And don’t assume they’ll scroll back to the top or go searching through your menu to find it.

It has to be easy.

The Bottom Line

Your website doesn’t need to be complicated to be effective.

It just needs to make it easy for people to find what they’re looking for, understand what you offer, and take the next step.

And sometimes the best way to improve your website is to stop looking at it like the person who built it and start looking at it like someone who’s never been there before.
